This is discussion for Nursing Leadership class. Bellow are an assignment descriptions:
For discussion, in addition to the Northouse (Northouse, P. G. (2019). Leadership: Theory and practice (9th ed.). Sage) reading, read the following online article:
Dyess, M. S., Sherman, O. R., Pratt, B. A., & Chiang-Hanisko, L. (2016). Growing nurse leaders: Their perspectives on nursing leadership and today’s practice environment. Links to an external site.. OJIN.
In our undergraduate curriculum, we have a core set of courses that focuses on learning and applying communication and leadership in the nursing profession. One of the most frequent “critiques” of these classes from some of our undergraduate nursing students is that they do not feel they need classes on leadership and it is not relevant to the nursing profession. They often suggest that, instead, we should focus more time and energy on areas like medical surgical nursing or health assessment.
Please use (and cite) the readings and your experience to answer the following questions:
As graduate nurses, and nurses who are in practice, how would you respond to this critique from undergraduate nursing students?
Is leadership just something you learn to do, or does it require a set of skills and training? Explain your answer.
What are the barriers and supports to nursing leadership?
Is there a particular style of leadership mentioned in the Northouse reading that you have found effective or ineffective in your experience as a nurse? Why.
