This case study assignment is an opportunity to think creatively about race, ethnicity, or a related
area, and how various methods of communication can allow for open discussions of social
issues. Having conversations with students about circumstances affecting their communities is an
education in itself. Dubois (1903) describes how “education must not simply teach work–it must
teach life,” and this approach facilitates the process of making connections between the literature
and social life. This assignment uses current events to reference materials that students might be
exposed to in their local communities. In order to maximize the discussions throughout the
course, the case study assignment opens the opportunity to explore local, national, and
international issues related to race and ethnicity. Students will submit a case study on a
contemporary race or ethnicity topic as presented in mainstream media.
Please write a 1-to-2-page double-spaced document. Written assignment must explain a current
event that took place in the course of the current semester. The write-up must include the
identification of race and ethnicity themes relevant to the case study. Include a discussion of any
ties to the course readings. Use in-text citations for direct quotes or paraphrases. Reflecting on a
student’s identity and critical reflexive expression, the assignment must include any combination
of comments, lived experiences, memories, questions, thoughts, or concerns raised by the case
study.
